IT Academy Scholarships
There are special IT-Academy scholarships available for Cybersecurity students starting from this semester. The scholarships are awarded based on rank in admission and the study results in the previous semesters. The main condition is that you have 30 EAP/semester in total and the rank is based on your average grade. The annoncement and statute of the scholarship is available on the faculty web site (in Estonian only). You don't have to apply for the scholarship. You will be announce when you will get it. You should consider the scholarship conditions in planning your studies this semester.
Language Classes
You have to register and give an initial test to attend the English for Science class. The test will take place on Monday, September 10th at 18.00 in room X-220. Lessons start on the 3rd week.

You are supposed to declare your courses for the first semester during the first half of september, using the OIS study portal.

Ideas for additional courses during fall
Observe that the first semester is relatively easy. It makes a lot of sense to take additional elective courses at the first semester.
The following suggested courses can be counted as optional courses in the Specialization module of your curricula. They will appear as free choice course initially, but can be moved to Specialization module after you get a grade.
Initial suggestions for courses in addition to the main course schedule are different for people with/without IT background. In the first case, get intro courses (generic intro, very basic programming and very basic networking). In the second case, take additional non-intro courses or do some courses (or replacements) in advance.
Independent of background
- ITV8040 Network Technology I (6 EAP) (strongly recommended)
- Lecures on Monday 12.00 (from week 2).
- Labs on Monday 14.30/16.00 IT College Cisco lab room 415.
- It is basically a CCNA Semester 1+2 course for Cybersecurity program
- It is suitable for students with no background in networking
- Good prerequisite course for MTAT.08.004 Network Technology 2 on semester 2 and ITV8060 Computer Network Security on semester 3
- IDS0020 Introduction to Cryptography
- Lectures in Estonian, but it is possible to have it as a self-study course and get all the needed resources from the professor
- Good prerequisite for the cryptography courses in semester 2 in Tartu
People with no/little IT background
You need to get some general IT background, very basic programming competence and intro to networking.
- General
- ITX0025 - Introduction to Information Technology (with Endre Domiczi)
- Programming: two options, start in parallel, then choose which (or both) to pursue:
- Partially self-study option: start http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/ and enroll to the comprehensive programming course based on java (ITI0011) programming course based on the book. The lectures are in Estonian (no point in attending unless you understand Estonian) but you can receive labwork in English and do the labs in English (choose a suitable labtime once per week from OIS and talk to lab instructors). In case you have no programming background, you'll simply have to do additional excercises from the book to get to the level required by the labs (doable). NB! For students speaking Estonian, just attend the iti0011 course as regular student, attend lectures etc (obviously, you'll still have to do additional excercises from the book).
- IDK1011 (in English) - Introduction to Programming. It is a soft start to programming.
People with an IT background
- Programming in C, one of the following courses
Sources for free choice courses
You can look for additional free choice courses from the following sources
Scan the OIS study portal for available courses this fall (takes effort, but it is useful to learn to find your way in OIS). You can find all the courses given in English (timetables of all international programs) in TUT by looking at OIS -> Timetables -> click to GB flag in the center of the page.
You can take some other language course (French, German, Russian, Finnish) offered by the Language Centre in addition to the courses (HLI2200, HLX8040) in your curricula. The list of the English-based courses.
ITX8511 Practical Training in Information Technology
You can get credit for ITI8511 if you have working experience in IT field. To get the credit you have to:
- have a working experience equivalent for at least 3 months of full-time job.
- fill an application in OIS (Applications -> Acceptance of practice). You cannot declare it as an ordinary course.
- ask your employer to fill the form (form is in Estonian).
- meet Tanel Tammet at consultancy or any other agreed time and explain your duties and results of the work done.
